The Great Separation and Ending Loneliness

01 November 2023

In this article, we want to share something a little bit different - an insight into what we have been working on nationally and why it’s important to us.

Our mission as a company and a community development team is to build more social connection and a greater sense of belonging in the neighbourhoods we create. It is this mission that drives everything from  our community events calendar to our design choices and national partnerships.

In the last few years, this mission has  led the team on a process of discovery and cultural research, culminating in  an industry partnership with Ending Loneliness Together and a documentary exploring the state of social disconnection and the healing balm of community.

Released in early October and broadcast on the free-to-air SBS network, The Great Separation charts the journey of protagonist, Joey Fry,  as he chats with a range of experts in  the fields of anthropology, social psychology, loneliness, neuroscience and body language to explore the modern state of belonging in Australia today and what can be done to deepen our sense of connection.

Our team were lucky enough to get a sneak peek at the documentary late last year, and there was no-one that was untouched by Joey’s story, and the sense of hope and optimism we walked away with has left a lasting impact.

“Joey’s journey had such a positive impact on our team, from changing small daily habits to better appreciating the importance of feeling connected at work, at home and with our respective communities. Brookhaven already has a strong sense of community and I look forward to seeing how Joey’s research helps strengthen it even more”

Community Development Manager, Marion Allard.

The Great Separation, funded by Frasers Property Australia, will be available for streaming on SBS On Demand for 12 months in the hope to reach as many people as possible.  We hope that you get something out of this story and share with family and friends to help spread the message that if they’re lonely, they are not alone.

The topics covered in this documentary can be hard, but if you feel comfortable, we would love to get your first impression and have a chat about the themes discussed. Please reach out to the Community Development Team at communityqld@frasersproperty. com.au if you would like to share your thoughts with the team.
