 Surfs Up

One of the worst-kept secrets of Shell Cove and its surrounding coastline is the incredible swell that rolls through several times a year and brings a string of big-name wave catchers.

With so many points, beaches and breaks to choose from, there is no shortage of waves to choose from and the June long weekend delivered, but Barrack Point drew the big names and even bigger waves.

Local board riders including Dean Bowen, Brett Connellan, Jordy Fowler and rising star Lennix Smith were on show with surfers travelling from Sydney to make the most of the swell, with the marina a much closer and ideal option to deploy the jetskis for the tow-outs.

When the perfect mix of off-shore winds and southern ground swell mix they provide perfect conditions and cement Shellharbour as a significant drawcard for wave chasers, big and small!

A sleepy surf town no more, Shellharbour is quickly becoming a favourite for locals and visitors alike, courtesy of its emerging list of offerings both in and out of the water and a unique vibe.

And it’s not just for the big kids. In the safety of Little Lake, it was amazing to see plenty of groms trying their hand at the much smaller, equally as inspiring, waves.

The draw of these giant waves is not just for the surfers; the sun coupled with their big-wave show can see plenty of people out enjoying the coast track on foot or by bike and where there were no surfers, there may be the odd spotting of migrating whales in winter or pods of dolphins and some of the most spectacular sunrises you’ve ever seen if you were up early enough to catch it.

The Waterfront, Shell Cove is more than just an emerging destination; it’s a lifestyle that brings that laid-back coastal charm with the convenience of education, work and direct access to the big cities.

Beyond the swell it was also great to see the budding food scene abuzz with cafes spilling over, restaurants alive, and the small businesses and boutiques scattered through the city also busy.

There is so much coming up on the city's event calendar; for the latest, check out our Facebook or Instagram pages.
