Waves of Discovery - It's a Dogs Life
Article eleven: It's a Dogs Life
Bass Point
There is an off-leash area between The Shallows coastal reserve and coal-loader (not including the beach area) and has become an extremely popular place to let dogs run, explore and socialise.
It’s a spectacular spot overlooking the ocean and is easily accessed from Shell Cove as either a short walk, ride or drive.
This area isn’t fenced or exclusive to dogs (or their owners) so there will be people using the site for picnics, swimming, surfing or just exploring and owners need to be wary and ensure that dogs can be controlled at all times.
The closest dog park to Shell Cove is located on Whittaker St, Flinders and not only is it a great place for dogs to be let loose to play, but it also includes a dog agility park for a little extra training (and fun!).
There is an additional agility park in Oak Flats which is also enclosed in a safe environment to ensure dogs are free to run and play with both sites offering water and bags for any mishaps.
Best Walks
There is no shortage of incredible walks around Shellharbour and dogs, once again, are the winners here.
From the foreshore and Reddall Reserve to Warilla Beach and Barrack Point, the Village or on the bike tracks over to Minnamurra, there are plenty of paths and roads to walk, ride or run. The tracks are relatively flat too, so it’s easy to get around!
The nearest off-leash beach is on the other side of the bridge in Windang or you can head south to Kiama where there is a dedicated off-leash area for dogs along Bombo beach.
Both sites are expansive with ample room to run – or swim!
In addition to these sites, Shellharbour City Council has a dedicated page on their website with all the best places and spaces for your dogs to enjoy.
And if you’ve been contemplating getting a dog but not sure how or where to start, there are plenty of deserving dogs looking for loving homes in shelters and foster homes across the state. Contact your RSPCA Shelter (Unanderra) or one of the many local rescues and charities.
