There’s something incredible about walks along the sand with the sun on your back and the salt in the air but equally, taking the tracks and trails less travelled and escaping to the multitude of rainforests and bush walks that line our escarpment.

From the Seven Mile Beach to the South, the Currarong Coastal walk or simply cruising around the headland of Bass Point, coastal treks are aplenty and the bonus of this time of year, the whales are making their migration north and if you’re lucky, you might just land yourself a front-row ticket to their spectacular show.

If the winds are up and you’re looking for something less exposed, it’s well worth heading to the hills and Macquarie Pass National Park has you sorted with several hikes through lush rainforest and lofty eucalypts.

The Cascades Walk is an achievable two-kilometre return walk that’s great for families or adults alike. Wander beneath the incredible canopy to a hidden waterfall and if you’re in no rush, meander by the water’s edge on the lookout for platypuses, lizards and lyrebirds. Not as suitable for kids or novice walkers is the slightly more adventurous Clover Hill Trail, a six-kilometre track. While the water will be icy in winter (it’s also icy in Summer if we’re honest) it’s well worth a dip when you make it to the waterfall!

The Kiama region is best known for the Blowhole, but it’s also earning a solid reputation for its food scene with fresh seafood, seasonal produce, award-winning restaurants and an emerging small bar scene.

If your idea of a winter escape centres around food, it would be remiss of us to overlook arguably the most visited caravan in Australia - the famous Berry Donut Van.

There is no shortage of world-class and hatted restaurants dotted across the South Coast or simply throwing out a picnic rug to enjoy the world-famous hot chips at Greenwell Point, regardless of your budget or taste, there is no shortage of flavours on the South Coast!
