A spotlight on local artists
There’s a passionate, vibrant and talented community of artists based in and around Mandurah, along with several outstanding galleries.
This month we’re looking at just a few, including two who live right here at Frasers Landing.
The first Frasers Landing artist is Deborah Zibah. According to her website, nature is her inspiration for creation.
“On my many walks and bike rides along the estuary, my mind is frequently drawn away into the creative processes of how to best interpret the plethora of images which present themselves to me.
“A bore water-blasted concrete pathway under my feet, pitted with rusty oranges and tones of mottled grey, the rhythmic lines of tidal silt abandoned on the shore by a receding river, or the dancing light sparkling on the estuary waters at sunset are just some inspiration themes for the making of art.”
On her website, Deborah says she makes her paintings on a large workbench outside her studio in a sheltered lean-to, off the wall of a large shed in her back yard. That’s where she says she is most happy, where the local twenty-eight parrots come regularly for their handful of almonds, and she can watch, and listen to, the chatter and calls of the birds who’ve made their homes in the tall trees on the property.
“Being out in the fresh air gives me a great sense of peace and restfulness.”

Another artist based at Frasers Landing is Edwin Boyes. Ed Boyes and his wife Claire retired to Frasers Landing last year for its tranquillity and welcoming sense of community. Earlier this year, as part of a Studio Residency Program, Ed was Artist-in-Residence at Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah (CASM).
During his residency, Ed dedicated himself to preparing for a solo exhibition. CASM created a short video of Ed’s experience. Watch here
Ed is a self-proclaimed ‘grey Picasso’. After spending most of his career as a graphic designer creating commissioned illustrations for clients, retirement has given him the freedom to transition from digital design to creating by hand. Ed imagines his style as a union between Lichtenstein’s Pop Art style of the 60’s and Frank Miller’s graphic novel work. His emerging style is in its formative stages, shifting from digital, hyper-realistic illustrations into hand-created canvas works utilising a traditional brush and pallet knife approach.
Dudley Park-based Leon Holmes is an international award-winning Australian artist, lecturer and ambassador, who has made himself a global name as being one of the most enthusiastic and successful professionals of his trade, Plein Air Oil Painting.
