Sand bund removal construction update

By way of an update on the channel entrance excavation… you may have noticed that things are moving a little slower than we forecast back when we created the ocean connection. This is because our methodology for the remaining excavation has been reviewed, in response to the force of the tidal exchange in the channel entrance scouring the sand bund, and also the weather conditions impacting our silt booms.

Therefore, in consultation with the authorities, we have agreed to only undertake works on an incoming tidal movement, not undertake any works in adverse weather conditions, and to cease works prior to the change in tidal movement direction. This is to reduce any visible staining of the water caused by tanins in the native excavated material both in the sand bund and on the channel entrance floor.

This has slowed down our works considerably, from all day works, to the incoming tide only. Therefore, you may also notice a second barge on site, which will be used as a ferry hopper to seek to maintain as much momentum as possible when the conditions are right. We have been liaising closely also with our engineers and marine biologists to ensure there is zero impact to the surrounding marine ecologies.
