Midtown's Acknowledgment of Country Totem Poles and Plaques

Midtown MacPark is proudly located on the lands of the Wallumedegal people of the Dharug nation.

To acknowledge the land on which Midtown MacPark stands, Totem Poles featuring Acknowledgment of Country plaques have been installed at all site entry points. Below, the artist shares the story behind the artwork featured on the totem poles.

Story:

This beautiful story pole artwork reflects the connection of the Wallumedegal people has with these lands and waterways.

Beautiful snapper fish were prominent and important to these poles as is mullet, bream, jew fish and sting rays in the Sydney bays and rivers of the Wallumedegal.

Connecting these are footprints, camp sites, terrains and gathering spots, a local connection to the lands of the Wallumedegal clans.

The large dots are the concentric circles are the locations of mobs to gather, eat, dance and to celebrate in rituals, such is the deep connection the Wallumedegal mobs have to this stunning place called home. - Dalmarri

Midtown Bees

Midtown MacPark is home to six beehives, housing approximately 100,000 European honeybees (Apis mellifera), which have been thriving in the Ecological Corridor since September 2023. These bees have been hard at work producing honey, which will be gifted to every new resident at Midtown. Beyond honey production, they play a vital role in supporting the local ecosystem by pollinating the Ecological Corridor and the community garden.

Residents have actively contributed to designing the honey jar logo and will soon receive hands-on mentoring and training from the Midtown Beekeeper. A variety of activities are also planned, including cooking with honey and learning how to make beeswax paper.

If you're interested in learning more about the bees or getting involved, please contact the Community Development Team.

We recognise the traditional custodians of the land on which Midtown MacPark is situated — the Wallumedegal people of the Dharug Nation. We pay our respects to the Elders past, present and future, for they hold the memories, the culture and dreams of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. We recognise and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs and continual relationship with the land and we recognise the importance of the young people who are the future leaders.
